About the game

I remember exactly the moment I first saw Street Fighter II on PC at a friend's place. He had a 486, a Sound Blaster, and on the screen Ryu was just blasting Blanka with a hadoken. It was 1992 and I knew this wasn't a normal game.

Street Fighter II by Capcom is a fighting game that hardly needs a long introduction. Pick a character from a diverse international roster — each with their own style, special moves, and personality — and work your way through opponents in arcade mode until you face the final boss. Simple premise, but hiding a surprising amount of depth.

The PC version from 1992, though, is a chapter all its own, and not exactly a glorious one. Mapping the arcade's six-button fighter control to the keyboard was pure torture back then. Special moves that flowed naturally on an arcade joystick turned into finger gymnastics on PC, leaving your hands hurting before your opponent did. The game was playable, but the port was noticeably worse than the console versions — the SNES release from the same year was simply in another league. If you didn't have a gamepad back then, you played with a certain degree of masochism.

Still — or maybe because of it — I remember that game so vividly. Street Fighter II was a cultural event in 1992. It defined the fighting game genre for the next decade, established the template that everything from Mortal Kombat to dozens of quick cash-in clones would copy. The special move system, readable animations, distinct fighting styles for each character — it all worked, even though it had to be squeezed onto imperfect hardware. Today the game has aged relatively well in terms of basic combat sense, but the PC version carries technical limitations that made sense back then and are simply historical curiosities now.

Anyone wanting to play Street Fighter II in a browser today should approach the PC version as a period document, not as the ideal way to experience the game. It's a snapshot of an era when arcade hits were ported to PC with varying degrees of success, and this one landed somewhere in the middle of that spectrum. For fans of retro PC gaming and port history — I recommend it. For those wanting the best Street Fighter II from that era — the SNES version stands taller. But at least now you know what I've got in my life resume under "formative experience."
